Territory Assignment (i.e. Alignment)

Greetings Team,
Our address book contains "rules" for Territory alignment. Assume when an AbEntry is "updated" or "created" via the API, that these rules are automatically refreshed? Or via the API, do I need to execute alignment manually? If I can, or if needed, how to I instruct the system align the Territory via rule or an AbEntry?
